How to make sense of Abstration in Art

Bob has worked in the arts for much of his career. He established Redletter Screenprint Workshop, worked variously as a graphic artist, screen printer/designer, a teacher, a scenic artist, a community artist and with the Trade Unions.
Overview
These classes will focus on developing an understanding of abstraction in painting and exploring numerous ways of approaching the creation of your own abstract artworks.
Each session will look at some of the different genres of abstract art including figurative and landscape abstraction, colour and psycho- logical abstraction, gestural and expressionist abstraction and others.
Along the way we will contextualise the emergence of abstract art through an historical overview from Kandinsky, Klee and Matisse through Cubism, the drip painting of Pollock, the colour field paintings of Rothko and Frankenthaler to post-modern contemporary abstract painters such as Catherine Cassidy and Rachael Jones.
A good portion of each session will be devoted to introducing you to a different practical entry points for the development of your own abstract painting practice.
If you come from a realist/narrative art practice and you wish to challenge at least some of the processes you have been using to make art, or you simply want to explore a different approach, this will be right up your alley. Expect lots of excitement and challenges, embracing surpirses, artistic play, turning ‘mistakes’ into successes as you begin to understand your own individual mark-making as the basis of your work.
